Affiliate programs are the most basic type of marketing online - almost every site selling something offers an affiliate program of some sort. The premise is simple - you sign up as an affiliate, promote the product through your affiliate link, and get a commission on any sales generated from your link. Promotion can be as little as just adding a link to your website, or as much as a full-scale advertising campaign - most programs will provide you with banners and other graphics, as well as text ads for emails and blogging. If you're not really interested in "full-time" marketing, but just want the possibility of a little extra income, this is a good way to go, especially if you already have an existing website or blog. Even if your site has nothing to do with marketing or sales, you can still use affiliate programs, just look for those that tie-in with the subject of your site - for example, if you have a site/blog about fishing, you can offer your viewers fishing equipment through an affiliate program.
Business opportunity-type programs are a bit more complicated, and require more of a time commitment - you will need to advertise consistently, and (just as with an offline business) it will take some time to get the ball rolling, but they offer the possibility of substantial future income if you stick with them. All business opp programs offer some type of "product" - whether information, services or merchandise. They either offer a commission on the products you sell (you advertise, people buy, you get paid) or a referral fee (you refer people, people sign up, you get paid), and some offer both. Some also have a multi-tiered program, where you can earn additional income from everyone you enroll, based on their sales and the people they enroll. In this case, you will also need to devote time to assisting your downline - having 1000 people signed up under you won't do you any good if they aren't actively promoting and selling. At the very minimum, they should provide advertising graphics and ad copy and links to your sales page/s. Unfortunately, a lot of business opportunity programs are scams.... remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't true - your PayPal account will not be flooded while you sleep, and you won't earn $15,000 in 15 minutes, regardless of the claims on the sales page. Also, resist the temptation to join every program you see - each program requires time and effort, and if you spread yourself thin, you won't see results in any program.
